CAPT John W. Kinnier, Sr. USN (Ret.)
1937 - 2011

It is with profound sadness that we report the death of our beloved member and friend, John W. Kinnier, Sr., Captain, United States Navy, Retired, of the Clans MacFarlane, Chisholm and U.S. Navy, who died over the January 14-16 weekend. Born on July 16, 1937, John was 73 years young.  John is survived by Lynne R. (nee Rollins) Kinnier, and devoted father of John W. Kinnier, II, Anne R. Waterfield of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Catherine Anne Gorman of Plymouth, Massachusetts and five grandchildren.

John joined the Society on 4 November 2000, four months after his friend Malcolm A. Dutterer, Jr., and had been pro-active in promoting the Society, its members and programs, since day one.  At the time of his death, John was a Foundation Trustee and Foundation Benevolence Committee member, and had served as a member of the Board of Managers; Chairman of the Hospitality Committee; and Chairman of the Society’s 2006 Bicentennial Committee.  He was awarded the Society’s “Spirit Award” at the annual Anniversary Dinner in December 2008 for exemplary service by a member with less than ten years of membership tenure.  Unless precluded by his teaching assignments or Masonic activities, John was a regular attendee and participant at the monthly Board of Managers meetings even after his term on the Board had been completed.  John’s son, Society member John W. Kinnier, II, survives his father.

John had extraordinary management skills and insights, honed over the years of his career of professional service to the United States Navy, and was a known as a true friend to every member of the Society.  He will be missed by all.  Our prayers of thanksgiving for the life of this dynamic man, and of deepest sympathy to John and his father’s entire family, are offered on this sudden loss of our close friend and companion.
