HAL C. WHITAKER
1935 - 2008
Hal Whitaker, a retired paper business executive who entertained friends and family with jokes and stories, died in his sleep of heart failure Monday at his North Baltimore home. He was 72.Hal Cummings Whitaker was born Oct. 26, 1935 in Baltimore and raised on Cloverhill Road. He was a 1954 graduate of Gilman School, where he played lacrosse. He received a bachelor's degree in history at Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of the lacrosse team. He belonged to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a proud member of the Clan MacKay. He joined the St. Andrew's Society of Baltimore on Dec. 2, 1997 and was a Senior member.
At his death, he was a vice president of Frank Parsons Paper Co., where he recently celebrated his 50th year of employment. He worked in commercial sales of paper to book publishers and printers, and called on customers throughout Baltimore. Mr. Whitaker ate lunch most weekdays at Maryland Club, where he typically ordered a chopped bacon, lettuce and tomato salad. He also made a practice of greeting others and often told a quick joke. "He had a litany of jokes and always told them in a fresh manner," said a friend, Allan J. Mead. "He was a funny guy and a terrific conversationalist. He never complained about anything, and he had not an enemy in the world."
Until sidelined by an injury some years ago, Mr. Whitaker was a squash player. Friends said he was known as the Gray Ghost. He had prematurely gray hair and played left-handed in doubles games. "He could appear out of nowhere and hit the ball against the wall. His opponents couldn't see it coming," his wife said. "He always attributed his success in squash to having good partners. He was a modest man." "He always put his family first," said his wife of 47 years, Madeline Smallwood "Dedi" Whitaker. "He was the same at home as he was everywhere else."
In January 1969, he was awarded a Baltimore Police Department Certificate of Honor for his "invaluable assistance" in apprehending robbers fleeing a South Broadway bank. He was taking a shotgun to be cleaned when he spotted a bank manager chasing apparent robbers as they fled near Eastern Avenue. Mr. Whitaker, who was driving his car, picked the manager up and chased a getaway vehicle. He never drew his shotgun but assisted in the capture.
He was a past commodore of the Maryland Club Yacht Squadron and held the same post at the Little Cranberry Island Yacht Club in Islesford, Maine, where he spent his summers sailing his 16-foot Herreshoff bullseye-class sailboat, called the Eider. "He liked nothing better than to take me out for a sail," said his wife Dedi . "I would pack the picnic. He was no good in the kitchen." "Hal was a great listener and was very fond of a good story. He was also a wonderful storyteller, with quite a repertoire of jokes, which only increased in popularity with his countless retellings."
Mr. Whitaker also belonged to the Virginians of Maryland, Saint Andrew's Society, Saint George's Society and the Maryland Historical Society. He was a former board member of the Fellowship of Christians in Universities and Schools (FOCUS) and was a member of the Anglican Church of the Resurrection in Baltimore County. He also enjoyed hunting geese and ducks on the Eastern Shore.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Molleson Whitaker O'Donovan of Baltimore and Katherine Whitaker Chaplin of Islesford; a sister, Jeanne Whitaker Price of Naples, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Malcolm A. Dutterer, Jr.
1937 - 2008
It is with profound sadness that I have been asked to report the death of our beloved member and friend, Malcolm A. Dutterer, Jr., Ph.D., who died in his sleep Wednesday evening, 10 September, after retiring to take a nap. Born on June 26, 1937, Malcolm was 71 years young.Malcolm joined the Society on July 11, 2000, and has been pro-active in promoting the Society, its members and programs, since day one. At the time of his death, Malcolm was the Chairman of the Hospitality Committee; Chairman of the Mascot Committee; a Foundation Trustee; the limousine driver for the senior members of the Escort to the Colors; most congenial (and voluntary) host of the summer socials and Christmas parties for new members and the Board; a member of the Board of Directors for the Colonial Highland Games at Fair Hill; and the on-air announcer for the Fair Hill Games; just to name a few of the more-numerous-than-you-can-count responsibilities Malcolm gladly undertook to make the Society better, and more fun, for all. In addition to his official duties, Malcolm was very active behind-the-scenes on advocating, promoting and implementing numerous projects to enhance the long-term activities of the Society, and the greater Scottish community at-large, as well. One of his most well-known pursuits was the education about, and promotion of, Highland cattle and beef, through visits to Peter Sheppard’s Apple Hill Farm, lunches at the Sheppard Mansion in Hanover, PA, and Malcolm’s two beloved Society mascots: Robbie McTavish and Sweetie Pie.
There is no better man I have ever known for a true Hieland welcome than Malcolm Dutterer (if you don’t know what that means, ask Ernest Smart or any native Scot from the West Highlands.) I expect Malcolm to be standing at Heaven’s Gate (right next to St. Peter) when I arrive, with open arms and his big, bright smile, exclaiming “What a grand and glorious day this is!”Our prayers of thanksgiving for the life of this dynamic man, and of deepest sympathy to Lisl and Malcolm’s entire family, are offered on this sudden loss of our close friend and companion.
